The decoction of this plant is used as tonic against weakness and in urinary complaints. Leaf paste is applied over glandular swellings and is used in dressing for sinus, sores and piles. Its roots posses contraceptive efficacy, while seeds are used as a blood purifier. Following various folk claims for the ailment of various diseases, efforts have been made by the researchers to verify the efficacy of this weed through scientific and biological screening. A scrutiny of the literature revealed some appreciable pharmacological activities of this plant like antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antioxidant. This article reviews the researches accomplished with M. hamata. As a compilation, plant biography, common names, ethnobotanical uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities have been discussed.
